Structure and spontaneity. Write it down. Words, ideas, special phrases, snippets of conversations. Keeping a writing journal is empowering and life-changing. Devote one hour per day to writing in small increments. You can do it! A commitment to write daily for eight weeks will ensure your success and become a routine.
Discipline and imaginative freedom. Take small steps. Snippets of writing and short vignettes can lead to longer compositions, flash fiction, short stories, a novella. Commit to your project. Be kind to yourself. Find daily inspiration. Just keep writing. Practice Imagination. Awareness of your habits and self-talk will help you to find ways to practice imagination. A few more things:
Where do stories come from? Reading books, classes, school, life experience. All this stuff we learn and experience every day. But, where do stories really come from?
What kind of storyteller of you? Oral history? Family historian? A writer?
Are you a “mood” writer? Are you structured as a writer?
What is your fascinating study? This teaches you contemplation. What book will you read and reflect upon?
What is your story, your quest, your journey?
What are your writing?
What is your current writing project?
What are your writing goals?
By the way, for this workshop: You are the writing project. Write your response to this.
What is your personal history in the context of storytelling? Truly, what is your story?
Family of origin is a powerful force in our personal history, but is that where your narrative begins?
